Not sure what to wear for your Destin Florida beach family photos? Here's a practical guide to outfits that photograph beautifully on the Emerald Coast.
Outfit coordination is one of the most common things families stress about before a beach session. We've seen it a hundred times — the session itself goes beautifully, but the week before is full of texts and second-guessing about what everyone should wear.
It doesn't need to be complicated. Here's what actually works in Destin's Emerald Coast light, and what to avoid.
Matching outfits — everyone in the same white linen, everyone in the same navy — can look a little stiff and overdone. What photographs better is a coordinated palette where everyone pulls from the same color family but wears slightly different pieces.
Think of it like decorating a room: you want the colors to work together without everything being identical.
Ocean neutrals — Whites, creams, soft tans, sandy beiges. Classic, timeless, and they reflect the Emerald Coast light beautifully. Work for all skin tones and all ages.
Coastal blues and whites — Light blue, sky blue, chambray, white. Complements the water color naturally without fighting it.
Warm earth tones — Terracotta, dusty rose, sage green, warm clay. These are beautiful in golden hour light and feel modern and natural without trying too hard.
Soft pastels — Blush, lavender, mint, pale yellow. Work especially well for younger kids and create a soft, dreamy quality in photos.
Neon and bright colors. Hot pink, bright orange, electric green — these colors dominate the frame and draw the eye away from faces. They also don't work well in the warm golden hour light.
Busy patterns. Stripes, plaids, large floral prints — these compete visually and can be distracting. Small, subtle patterns are fine. Large, bold ones are not.
Overly formal clothing. Beach sessions should feel like the beach. Suit jackets, formal dresses, and stiff fabrics look out of place in the sand and tend to make people feel uncomfortable, which shows in their expressions.
Logos and graphics. Branded tees or shirts with words or images draw the eye and date the photos.
Bare feet almost always look better. Shoes on the beach look awkward in most cases. Plan to go barefoot, and enjoy the sand.
Light layers work well. There's almost always a Gulf breeze in the evening. A light linen or chiffon layer on Mom or an open button-down on Dad adds movement and texture to photos without being heavy or hot.
Consider the kids separately. Young kids can get away with patterns and brighter colors that adults should avoid — just make sure they're pulling from the same general palette. A little girl in a soft floral that picks up the dusty rose everyone else is wearing: perfect.
Coordinate shoes even if you're going barefoot. If anyone is wearing sandals, make sure they're simple and neutral. Bright sneakers or heavily branded footwear tend to stick out.
