What to Ask Before Booking a Gulf Shores Beach Photographer

Not all photographers in Gulf Shores Alabama are the same. Here are the most important questions to ask before booking your beach session — and what the answers reveal.

What to Ask Before Booking a Gulf Shores Beach Photographer

So you've decided to do beach photos on your Gulf Coast vacation. Great call. Now comes the part that trips up a lot of families — figuring out which photographer to actually book.

There's no shortage of photographers in Gulf Shores, Alabama. But the difference between a session that produces one or two decent shots and one that gives you 40+ images you'll actually print and hang? That usually comes down to the questions you ask before you ever confirm a date.

Here's what we'd encourage every family to ask — and why the answers matter more than you might expect.

"What camera system do you use?"

This might feel like a technical question you don't need to care about, but hear us out.

Most beach photographers shoot with consumer or prosumer DSLR or mirrorless cameras. That's fine — you can absolutely get good images with those systems. But we shoot with a Hasselblad medium format camera system that captures at 100 megapixels per image. That's roughly 4x the resolution of most professional cameras.

Why does that matter to you? Because when you want to print a 30x40 canvas for above your fireplace, or a panoramic print that wraps across your living room wall, resolution determines how sharp and stunning that image looks up close. A low-res file printed large turns muddy. A Hasselblad file stays razor sharp.

If large wall art is anywhere in your vision for these photos, ask about the camera system first.

"Will there be one photographer or two?"

Most photographers work alone. For small families, that works fine. But for larger groups — or any family that wants both the wide group shots and the candid, in-between moments — one photographer physically can't be in two places at once.

At Shelley B Photography, Shelley and Blaine both shoot your session. That means while Shelley is directing the group for posed portraits, Blaine is wide, capturing the whole scene — the little one tugging at Dad's hand, the teenager laughing at something her grandmother said. Those are the shots that end up being people's absolute favorites, and they only exist because someone was there to catch them.

If you have more than 6 or 7 people in your group, a two-photographer team isn't a luxury — it's the only way to really do the session justice.

"How many families do you book per evening?"

This is a question most people don't think to ask, and it makes a bigger difference than you'd imagine.

Some photographers book back-to-back sessions, rotating families through the same stretch of beach in 30-minute slots. It's efficient for them. For you, it means your photographer has one eye on the clock the whole time, there are strangers walking through your shots, and the light is shared with whoever was before and after you.

We book one family per sunset. One. That's it.

That means from the moment golden hour starts until the last colors leave the sky, that light belongs entirely to your family. Your photographer isn't rushing. The beach isn't crowded with other sessions. You get the full experience — and the full light window — to yourself.

It's one of the things our clients mention most in reviews, and it's a policy we feel strongly about. When you're asking other photographers, ask specifically: "How many families do you photograph in a single evening?"

"Do you come to us, or do we have to meet you somewhere?"

A lot of photographers work out of a specific spot on the beach. You meet them there, shoot there, and that's that. Which is fine — but it's not how we operate.

We come to you. Beach house, condo balcony, the stretch of sand right in front of where you're staying — wherever feels most comfortable and convenient for your family, we'll meet you there.

This matters especially for families traveling with young kids or older grandparents. Nobody has to load everyone into cars and drive somewhere. The session starts where you already are, which usually means kids are calmer, grandparents are more comfortable, and the whole thing feels less like a production and more like a natural part of your vacation evening.

"Can I see examples of your work with groups similar to mine?"

A photographer's portfolio should include work that looks like your family — in size, in age range, in vibe. If you have 20 people ranging from 6 months to 85 years, ask to see how they've handled that. If you have a family with lots of young kids, ask for examples of sessions with that kind of energy.

Our portfolio includes everything from couples and small families all the way up to extended family reunions with 30+ people. Large group coordination is genuinely a different skill — managing spacing, sightlines, expressions, and natural energy all at once — and it's something we've spent years getting really good at.

"Have you been published or recognized for your work?"

This isn't about ego — it's about a meaningful signal of quality. Editorial publications choose photographers carefully, and being selected by major outlets is a mark of genuine craft.

Shelley B Photography has been featured five times in major press — including the Wall Street Journal and Pensacola Magazine (where Shelley's work appeared on the cover). Those aren't paid placements. They're editorial recognitions.

It's not required context for booking a photographer, but it's worth knowing who you're trusting with some of your family's most meaningful memories.

"What happens if we need to reschedule?"

Gulf Coast weather can be unpredictable. Ask about rescheduling policies upfront so there are no surprises if a storm rolls in or a family member gets sick. A photographer who has clear, fair policies about weather and rebooking is one who's thought about the client experience.
