Worried about doing beach photos with young kids on 30A? Shelley B Photography specializes in natural, relaxed family sessions in Santa Rosa Beach that actually work with children.
The number one concern we hear from parents before booking a beach session is some version of: "My kids won't cooperate." The toddler who hates being told what to do. The five-year-old who's been in the sun all day and is running on empty. The baby who picked this exact week to start fighting naps.
We hear you. We've photographed every version of this. And here's the truth: kids who "won't cooperate" for photos are almost always kids who haven't been given the right environment to shine. The approach matters more than the child.
The beach is already one of kids' favorite places on earth. Sand, water, waves — it's all input they love. When a session starts on the beach instead of a formal studio or an indoor setting, the kids' energy is already positive before the camera comes out. They're in their element, which means they're more themselves.
We lean into that. We don't try to suppress it.
We don't start with formal poses. We start by letting kids run, explore, and acclimate to having photographers around. Young children are naturally wary of strangers with cameras — the best way to break that down is to stop being strangers. We interact with the kids, get on their level, make them laugh. By the time we start asking for any kind of arrangement, they're comfortable.
We work fast when we need the formal shots. When it's time to get everyone together for the group portraits, we work efficiently — we know we have a limited window with young children before cooperation breaks down. We get the key shots, then step back and let the session breathe again.
We use the candid moments. With two photographers covering the session simultaneously, we never miss a moment because we were focused on something else. Blaine is wide, capturing the whole scene and the in-between moments, while Shelley manages the formal arrangements. The kid who wandered off toward the water, the baby's expression when the wave came close, the siblings having a genuine laugh together — those are in the gallery because someone was watching for them.
We time sessions well. Golden hour on 30A runs late in summer — often 7:30pm or later for sunset. We'll talk through your family's rhythm before booking. A session that works with nap and bedtime schedules is a dramatically better session than one that fights them.
30A in general, and Santa Rosa Beach in particular, has a relaxed energy that works in everyone's favor. The beach is beautiful, the setting is natural, and kids feel less like they're being asked to perform and more like they're just... at the beach. That difference in how the session feels is huge — and it shows in the images.
