Shelley B Photography is your Orange Beach Alabama photographer for family beach sessions, extended families, and large groups. Beautiful, relaxed sessions on the Emerald Coast.
There's a reason people call this stretch of coastline the Emerald Coast. The water here — that incredible blue-green that seems almost too beautiful to be real — makes for some of the most stunning beach photography you'll find anywhere. And as an Orange Beach Alabama photographer, I get to work in this backdrop every single day.
I'm Shelley, and if you're planning a family trip to Orange Beach, I would love to be the person behind the camera for your beach session. Whether you're a family of four looking for some classic portraits or a multi-generational group of twenty who all happened to vacation together this year, I'm here for it.
Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are neighboring beach towns right next to each other, and honestly, the beaches blend together pretty seamlessly. But there are some small differences worth knowing.
Orange Beach tends to feel a little more laid-back, a little less tourist-crowded in the height of summer, and there are some gorgeous stretches of beach — especially near Perdido Pass and along the quieter residential areas — that offer beautiful, uncluttered backdrops. The water is also a little more vibrant in certain spots, with that deep emerald-green color that gives the coast its nickname.
For photography, both locations are absolutely stunning. If you're staying in Orange Beach, we can absolutely shoot right near where you're staying. If you're staying somewhere between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, we'll figure out the perfect spot based on the light and what you're envisioning.
The feedback I hear most often from families after their sessions? "That was so much more fun than I expected." And I think that speaks to what a beach session can be when it's done right.
Here's what families love most:
It's relaxed and pressure-free. Nobody needs to be perfect. I'm not asking your kids to sit still and smile at an invisible spot on the wall. We're at the beach — we're going to play, walk, laugh, and let the whole thing feel like an extension of your vacation. The photos come out so much better that way.
The setting does all the heavy lifting. The Orange Beach coastline is so gorgeous that even a simple photo of your family walking along the shoreline is frame-worthy. The light, the water, the sand — it all works together to create images that look like they belong in a magazine.
You finally get photos with everyone in them. Including you, mom. I hear this all the time: "I'm always the one taking the photos, so I'm never in them." A professional session means everyone gets to be present. You get to actually be in the memory you're creating.
After photographing families all along this coastline, here are my top tips for making your Orange Beach session a success:
Book golden hour. The hour before sunset is the golden hour for a reason — the light turns warm and magical, the beach gets a little quieter, and everything just glows. I schedule almost all of my sessions at this time, and it makes a massive difference in the final photos.
Keep outfits relaxed and coastal. This isn't the place for formal attire. Think flowy dresses, linen shirts, white tees, and shorts. Soft, beachy tones like white, cream, sand, and soft blue look gorgeous against the water. Avoid matching everyone exactly — a coordinated palette feels more natural and relaxed.
Let go of the agenda. I know you want certain shots — the full family together, the siblings, the kids with grandparents. We'll get all of that. But leave room for the unexpected moments too. Those are usually the ones that become your favorites.
Come fed and hydrated. Especially if you have young kids. A hungry, thirsty toddler is not a cooperative toddler. Make sure everyone has eaten and had plenty of water before we meet at the beach.
Large group photography is something I genuinely love. Reunions, extended families, multigenerational trips — if you've got a crowd, bring them. I'm experienced in organizing large groups quickly and efficiently so that we can get through every combination without losing anyone's patience.
For large groups in Orange Beach, I recommend scheduling a longer session — typically 90 minutes to two hours — so we have plenty of time to capture the full group, subgroups, and individual families without rushing. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to get the evening time slot you want, especially in peak summer season.
If you're searching for photographers in Orange Beach, AL, here's my honest advice on what to look for beyond just a pretty portfolio:
Look for someone who communicates clearly and promptly. The logistics of a beach session — timing, location, outfit guidance — require good communication before you ever set foot on the sand.
Look for experience with families, especially kids. Posing adults is one thing; photographing kids who have their own agenda is a whole different skill set. You want someone who can work with children in a gentle, patient, fun way.
Look for someone whose editing style matches what you want. My style tends toward warm, natural tones — not overly bright or faded, but true to life with a soft, sun-kissed feel. Take a look at my gallery and make sure it resonates with you.
Whether you've been dreaming about family photos on the Emerald Coast for years, or you just decided on a whim that this beach trip needs a photographer — I would love to make it happen.
