Large Group Beach Photography in Gulf Shores Alabama: Family Reunions, Extended Families & More

If you've ever tried to wrangle twenty-plus family members into a photo, you know what a production it can be. Someone's always looking the wrong way. The kids won't stop running. Grandma wants to move out of the sun. And somehow, nobody can agree on what time to meet at the beach.

That's where I come in.

Hi, I'm Shelley, and large group beach photography in Gulf Shores, Alabama is honestly one of my favorite things to shoot. There's something so special about capturing multiple generations together — grandparents, parents, kids, cousins — all in one frame, on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country. These are the photos families treasure for decades.

Why Gulf Shores is Perfect for Large Group Beach Sessions

The beaches at Gulf Shores are wide, open, and gorgeous — which makes them ideal for large group photography. We've got plenty of room to spread out, find great natural light, and create a variety of shots without feeling cramped. The Gulf's calm, clear water makes a stunning backdrop, and that famous white sand photographs beautifully in almost any lighting.

Gulf Shores also draws families from all over the Southeast for reunion trips every single summer. If your family makes an annual pilgrimage to the Alabama Gulf Coast, adding a professional photo session to the itinerary is a tradition worth starting. Imagine having a new set of stunning family photos every year — watching the kids grow, seeing the family expand, capturing whoever's newest and celebrating whoever's been with you the longest.

How I Handle Large Group Sessions

Let's be real: photographing 20, 30, or even 50 people at once requires a plan. Here's how I approach large group sessions to make sure everything runs smoothly and the photos actually look great.

We start with the full group. Getting everyone together first — while energy is high and patience hasn't run out — is the smart move. I'll get your group organized quickly and efficiently. I've done this enough times to know exactly how to position large groups so everyone's face is visible and the composition looks balanced, not like a blob of people.

Then we break it down. After the big group shots, we'll start pulling out smaller groups — siblings and their families, the grandkids together, each nuclear family unit. This is where the session really comes to life. You end up with a full set of photos that covers every combination people actually want printed and framed.

We let the candids happen. Some of the best large group photos aren't posed at all. It's the cousins splashing in the waves together, the grandparents watching everyone from the shoreline, the little ones digging in the sand while the adults laugh nearby. I keep my eye out for these moments throughout the entire session.

We keep it fun. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but I promise — it doesn't have to feel that way. I keep the energy light and the instructions clear. Most families tell me afterward that it was way more fun than they expected.

What to Know Before Your Large Group Session

Here are a few things that make a big difference for large group beach photography:

Coordinate early. Getting 20+ people in coordinating outfits is not a last-minute thing. I recommend choosing a color palette about two to three weeks before your session and communicating it clearly to every family unit. Soft whites, creams, tans, and blues are classic Gulf Shores looks. Avoid logos, patterns, and neons — they distract from faces and don't photograph as well.

Book early — especially in summer. Gulf Shores in the summer is busy. If you're planning a reunion session, reach out as soon as you have your trip dates locked in. Popular evenings fill up fast, and large group sessions require more logistical planning than a standard session.

Plan for a longer session. A standard family session runs 45-60 minutes. For large groups, plan for 90 minutes to 2 hours. That gives us plenty of time to work through all the group combinations without rushing.

Designate a family wrangler. I'm great at photography — but someone in your family knows everyone's names and relationships better than I do. Designating one person (often whoever organized the reunion) to help corral people and call out group combinations is a huge help. It keeps things moving and cuts down on confusion.

Lower the expectations for the kids. The little ones are going to do what little ones do. They'll run, cry, refuse to cooperate, and then suddenly beam at the camera for no reason at all. I've learned to roll with it, and I promise you — some of the most charming photos come from the chaos. Just let them be kids.

Beach Photography Gulf Shores Alabama: Why Families Keep Coming Back

I've photographed the same families for multiple years running, and watching those galleries evolve is one of the most meaningful parts of this work. Babies become toddlers. Teenagers turn into young adults. New spouses and new babies join the family. The photos become a living record of your family's story.

Gulf Shores is a place that families return to again and again — and so do the families who book with me. Once you've got your reunion photos from one year, it's hard not to want them again next year.
