Shelley B Photography uses a Hasselblad medium format camera at 100 megapixels for every Gulf Shores family session. Here's why that matters for your family portraits.
Most photographers don't talk about their gear. And honestly, for most of what photography involves, the camera matters a lot less than the photographer holding it. But there's one piece of equipment we use that genuinely changes what's possible in a family portrait session — and we think it's worth explaining.
Every session we photograph — whether it's a family of four on Gulf Shores beach or a forty-person reunion at Fort Morgan — is shot on a Hasselblad medium format camera at 100 megapixels.
That number sounds technical. Here's what it actually means for your family.
Most professional photographers — even really excellent ones — shoot on what's called a 35mm full-frame camera. These are outstanding cameras, and they produce beautiful images. The best ones top out at around 45 megapixels.
A medium format camera has a larger sensor. Significantly larger. The Hasselblad we use captures images at 100 megapixels — more than twice the resolution of a top-of-the-line full-frame camera.
That extra resolution isn't just a number. It changes the quality of the image in ways that are immediately visible when you look closely, and even more visible when you print large.
Here's the most tangible way to think about what 100 megapixels means for your family portraits:
Color depth is richer. The Hasselblad captures a wider dynamic range and deeper color information than a standard camera. The turquoise of the Gulf water, the warm gold of sunset light, the soft whites of the sand — these colors are more accurate, more vivid, and more three-dimensional in a Hasselblad image than in an image from a standard professional camera.
Fine detail is extraordinary. Zoom into a 100-megapixel image and you can see individual strands of hair, the texture of fabric, the grain of the sand. This level of detail is what allows for large-format printing without any loss of quality.
Large-format wall art is possible. This is where the difference becomes undeniable. If you want to print a 30x40 canvas or a large panoramic print for your wall, a standard camera image will begin to look soft at that size. A Hasselblad image at 100 megapixels remains sharp and detailed at even the largest print sizes. Your family portrait can become a true work of art for your home.
The Alabama Gulf Coast is genuinely one of the most photogenic places in the country. The light here is extraordinary — especially at golden hour, when everything turns warm and golden and the Gulf water shifts from turquoise to emerald. The white sand beaches, the dramatic skies, the horizon that stretches on forever.
We built our entire workflow around the Hasselblad because we believe this place deserves to be captured at the highest level possible. When you're standing on the Fort Morgan peninsula with a sunset painting the sky behind you and the Gulf stretching to the horizon, that moment deserves 100 megapixels.
It also means our panoramic images are unlike anything you'll see from another photographer in this area. We include sweeping panoramic shots in every gallery — wide images that capture the full scale of the Gulf behind your family — and at 100 megapixels, those images are jaw-dropping when printed large.
Blaine and I work as a two-photographer team on every session. Shelley handles posed portraits and classic compositions. Blaine moves freely for candid moments and creative angles. Both of us are shooting on the same Hasselblad system, which means your entire gallery — posed and candid, wide and intimate — has that same extraordinary image quality throughout.
We also never double-book a golden hour. When you book a session with us, that sunset belongs entirely to your family. We're not rushing through your session because someone else is waiting. We take the time to get it right.
The Hasselblad H series and X series are the systems used by the world's top portrait and fashion photographers. When you see an advertisement for a luxury brand — a watch campaign, a high-end fashion spread, a fine art portrait — there's a very good chance it was shot on a Hasselblad.
We bring that same system to the Gulf Shores beach. To your family. To the evening you're spending together on the Gulf Coast.
Shelley B Photography has been published in the Wall Street Journal and has appeared on the cover of Pensacola Magazine five times. We take this work seriously — and the equipment we choose reflects that.
If you're planning a family trip to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, or Perdido Key, we'd love to bring our full setup to your vacation rental and create something extraordinary together.
