Trying to decide between Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan for your family beach photos? A local photographer breaks down each location so you can choose the perfect backdrop.
One of the most common questions we get from families booking sessions along the Alabama Gulf Coast is some version of: "Does the location matter? Should we request a specific beach?"
The honest answer is — yes, a little. All three of these locations are genuinely beautiful and any of them will make for a stunning session. But they each have a distinct character, and knowing the difference can help you choose the one that fits your family's vacation and vibe.
I'm Shelley, and together with Blaine, we photograph families across all three of these locations. We bring our two-photographer team and our Hasselblad medium format camera directly to wherever you're staying — so you don't have to move a muscle. But here's what each location brings to the table.
Gulf Shores is the most developed of the three areas, and for good reason — it's been the heart of Alabama's Gulf Coast vacation scene for decades. The beaches here are wide, well-maintained, and consistently beautiful. The sand is white, the water is that iconic turquoise-blue, and there's an energy to Gulf Shores that feels festive and alive.
Best for: Families who want the quintessential Gulf Coast beach photo experience. Wide open beaches, easy access, and that classic Alabama beach look. Also great for larger groups — there's plenty of room to spread out.
Golden hour: Gulf Shores offers beautiful light in the hour before sunset, especially along the state park areas and the quieter stretches east of the main strip. We know exactly where to position your family to get the cleanest, most beautiful backgrounds.
Things to know: Gulf Shores can get crowded, especially in peak summer. We choose our session locations carefully to avoid congested areas, and our timing (golden hour) naturally means fewer people on the beach.
Orange Beach sits just east of Gulf Shores, and while the beaches are just as gorgeous, the atmosphere is slightly more relaxed and residential. The water here leans toward that deep emerald-green that the Florida Panhandle is famous for, and some stretches of Orange Beach coastline are genuinely stunning in a quieter, less-trafficked way.
Best for: Families who want a slightly more private feel without going all the way out to Fort Morgan. Orange Beach is also great for families staying in condos along Perdido Pass — we can meet you right on the beach near your building.
Golden hour: Orange Beach faces slightly southwest, which means evening sessions catch a gorgeous angle of light. The water color at golden hour out here is extraordinary — rich greens and blues that make for some of the most vibrant beach photography on the entire Gulf Coast.
Things to know: Some of the best spots in Orange Beach require knowing where to go. We've photographed hundreds of sessions here and we scout our locations specifically for your session date and the direction of the light.
Fort Morgan is in a different category entirely. The peninsula is quiet, underdeveloped, and feels genuinely away from it all. The beaches here are wide and open, with fewer buildings, more sea oats, and that raw Gulf Coast beauty that's harder to find closer to town.
Best for: Families who want a more intimate, secluded feel. Fort Morgan is especially popular with extended families and reunion groups who rent large houses on the peninsula — the private beach access is incredible. It's also stunning for panoramic photography, since there's nothing interrupting the horizon.
Golden hour: The light at Fort Morgan during golden hour is some of the best we've ever photographed in. The open sky, the unobstructed horizon, and the quieter atmosphere create a magical combination. Sunsets here tend to be dramatic and deeply colored.
Things to know: Fort Morgan is about 45 minutes from Gulf Shores, so if you're staying there, it's a destination session — which is exactly why we come to you. We drive out to Fort Morgan frequently and always love it. Book early because Fort Morgan dates fill up fast.
For most families, the best location is simply where you're already staying. We come directly to your beach house or condo — there's no reason to add logistics to your vacation evening. If you're in Gulf Shores, we'll find the best spot near you. If you're in Orange Beach, same thing. Fort Morgan? We're already there.
That said, if you have flexibility and you're specifically asking which location we find most photogenic, Fort Morgan edges out the others for its raw beauty and open sky. Orange Beach is our pick for water color. And Gulf Shores is the most versatile, especially for large groups.
