Looking for a Gulf Shores family photographer? Shelley B Photography specializes in relaxed, beautiful beach sessions for families of all sizes in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
There's something about the Gulf Shores coastline that just feels like home — even if you're only visiting for a week. The sugar-white sand, the warm turquoise water, the way the light turns golden right before sunset. It's the kind of place where memories make themselves. And as your Gulf Shores family photographer, my whole job is to make sure you actually keep those memories long after the vacation ends.
I'm Shelley, and I've been photographing families along the Alabama Gulf Coast for years. I know these beaches — the best spots, the best light, the best times of day. More than that, I know how to work with real families: the toddlers who won't sit still, the teenagers who think they're too cool for photos, the grandparents who just want everyone to look nice. I've seen it all, and honestly? It's my favorite thing in the world.
Gulf Shores is one of those magical places where everything comes together. You've got easy access to wide stretches of public beach, gentle waves that are safe for little ones, and that famous Gulf Coast light that makes every photo look like it was taken on a movie set. Families come here from all over — Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi — and many of them make booking a beach session part of their annual tradition.
If you're visiting Gulf Shores, adding a photography session to your trip is one of the best decisions you can make. Instead of a pile of blurry phone photos, you'll go home with a gallery of images that actually capture how it felt to be there — sun-kissed, relaxed, and all together.
I like to keep things relaxed. My sessions aren't stiff or posed — I'm not going to line everyone up and yell "say cheese." Instead, I'll get your family moving, laughing, and interacting naturally. We'll walk along the shoreline, splash in the waves a little, maybe build a sandcastle with the little ones. The best photos always happen when everyone forgets the camera is there.
Here's what a typical session looks like:
Before the session: We'll chat about your family, what you're hoping to capture, and what to wear. I'll send you tips on outfit coordination that photographs beautifully without looking too matchy-matchy. Think soft neutrals, whites, and coastal tones — nothing too busy.
Location & timing: Most of my Gulf Shores sessions happen at golden hour, about an hour before sunset. The light is warm and flattering, the beach is usually a little less crowded, and the whole mood is just magic. I'll scout the best spot based on where the light is falling that evening.
During the session: Sessions typically run 45 minutes to an hour. That's plenty of time to get a mix of posed family portraits, candid moments, and some fun shots with the kids. We'll work with the beach, the waves, and whatever the evening gives us.
After the session: Within a couple of weeks, you'll receive a gallery of edited, beautiful images that are yours to download, print, and share. Most families end up getting prints made for their walls — and honestly, a big canvas of your family on the Gulf Shores beach is the best souvenir there is.
After photographing hundreds of families on these beaches, here's what I've learned:
Arrive a little early. Give yourself time to park, get everyone to the beach, and let the kids burn off some energy before we start shooting. Trying to coral a wound-up five-year-old for photos the second you hit the sand is a recipe for stress — for everyone.
Don't stress about perfection. The moments I love most are the real ones — a dad swinging his daughter into the waves, a mom laughing at something her son said, siblings chasing each other down the shoreline. Let it be a little messy. That's where the magic lives.
Coordinate outfits, don't match exactly. Matching outfits can look a little stiff in photos. Instead, pick a color palette and let everyone interpret it in their own way. A soft blue linen shirt on dad, a floral dress with blue in it for mom, a white romper for the baby — that kind of thing looks cohesive without being costume-y.
Trust the process. I know it can feel chaotic in the moment, especially with young kids. But I promise, I'm capturing beautiful things even when it feels like everything is falling apart. The photos will surprise you.
Whether you're planning a family vacation to Gulf Shores, celebrating a milestone, or just want to capture your crew on the coast, I would love to be your photographer. Sessions book up fast in the summer — especially around holidays — so the earlier you reach out, the better.
Let's create something beautiful together.
