Staying in a Gulf Shores condo or beach house? Shelley B Photography comes directly to your rental for golden hour family portraits. Here's exactly how the process works.
Most families who reach out to us have a similar question somewhere in their message: "How does this actually work?" They're picturing coordinating a meeting point, figuring out parking near a busy beach access, and wrangling everyone from the condo to the beach on some tight timeline.
The actual answer is much simpler. We come to you.
Here's exactly how a Shelley B Photography session works — from first contact to finished gallery — so you know what to expect before you even reach out.
Send us a message through our contact page. Include your vacation dates, where you're staying in Gulf Shores (or Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, or Perdido Key), a rough sense of your family size, and any questions you have.
You don't need to have everything figured out. We just need enough to check our calendar and figure out whether we're a good fit.
We respond quickly — usually within a day — and we'll have a short conversation about your session. We'll confirm the date and time (almost always golden hour, the 60 minutes before sunset), talk through what you're hoping to capture, and answer any questions.
We'll also send you our outfit guide — our recommendations for colors and styles that photograph beautifully on the Gulf Coast. This is one of the things families appreciate most. Getting 6 or 10 or 20 people coordinated in something that looks great on camera is harder than it sounds, and our guidance makes it simple.
You don't do anything logistically. We drive to your vacation rental — your condo, your beach house, wherever you're staying — and we text you when we're pulling in.
Give everyone a few extra minutes before we arrive to make sure everyone's dressed and ready. That's it. We handle everything else.
When we arrive, we'll introduce ourselves and then we'll all walk to the beach together. If your property has private beach access, we'll use it. If not, we'll walk to the nearest access point — we'll already know where it is and what the conditions look like.
The walk to the beach is actually a useful transition for kids. It gives them a minute to shift from "inside mode" to "beach mode" — to feel the sand, get some energy out, and relax before we start shooting.
Sessions typically run 60-90 minutes. Here's what happens:
Shelley works with your family on posed portraits — getting everyone arranged beautifully, directing expressions, creating the classic composed images that form the backbone of your gallery. She's warm and patient, especially with kids. There's no pressure, no counting to three, no stiff posing. These portraits look natural because the process is natural.
Simultaneously, Blaine is moving freely around the session — different angle, different focal length, watching for candid moments. He's the one who catches the kid who just discovered something in the sand, the teenager who finally gave a genuine smile, the quiet moment between grandparents. These are the images that make people emotional when they see their gallery.
We shoot everything on a Hasselblad medium format camera at 100 megapixels. Standard portrait images and wide panoramics are both included in every gallery.
We never double-book a golden hour session. Your sunset belongs entirely to your family — we're not rushing to wrap up for anyone else.
As the sun finishes setting and the light fades, the session naturally winds down. We say goodbye, you head back inside, and your family has had a beautiful evening on the beach together.
There's no rush. There's no next family waiting. We finish when the session is finished.
Within a few weeks, you'll receive your fully edited gallery — a collection of images in both standard portrait formats and wide panoramic sizes, all at full Hasselblad resolution. Ready to download, print, share, and put on your walls.
Most families tell us this is the moment the session fully lands for them. The images are beautiful in a way that exceeds what they were picturing. The candid moments Blaine captured are the ones they cry over. The panoramics make them want to print something enormous.
That reaction is why we do this.
What if my condo doesn't have private beach access?
No problem at all. We'll walk with you to the nearest public access point. We know the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach coastlines well and we'll find a great spot.
What if it rains?
We keep a close eye on the weather and communicate with you in advance if conditions look concerning. Gulf Coast weather can change quickly, and we're experienced at making session-day decisions that protect everyone's time.
How many people can you accommodate?
We photograph families of all sizes — from 3 people to 50+. For larger groups, we recommend booking a longer session (90 minutes to two hours) so we have time to work through all the combinations.
What if the kids are having a tough evening?
This happens. We've seen it all. We're patient, we know how to work with kids in all moods, and we promise — the gallery will still be beautiful. Take a deep breath. It always comes together.
