Trying to decide between Destin and 30A for your family beach photos? Here's an honest comparison of what both locations offer for a Florida Panhandle photography session.
We photograph families across the entire Florida Panhandle — Destin on the west end, all the way through 30A and Santa Rosa Beach toward the east. Both are stunning. Both have that signature Emerald Coast water color and sugar-white sand. But they have genuinely different characters as photography locations, and if you have flexibility in where you stay, it's worth knowing what each offers.
Destin is the more developed and higher-traffic of the two destinations. That brings advantages — more rental inventory, more beach access points, proximity to restaurants and activities — and a few photography-specific considerations.
The beaches are wide and beautiful. Destin's beaches are some of the widest on the Gulf Coast, which is great for large groups. You have real room to spread out and create depth in your images without cramming people together.
Henderson Beach State Park is exceptional. Right in the heart of Destin, the state park gives you a protected, natural beach with dune vegetation backgrounds. It photographs beautifully and tends to be less crowded than the public access strips.
It can get busy. During peak summer weeks, some of Destin's more accessible beaches see a lot of foot traffic. A good photographer works around this, but it's worth knowing. Golden hour helps — the crowd thins a bit as the day cools and people head to dinner.
30A refers to the stretch of Highway 30A that runs along a chain of coastal dune lakes and protected Gulf shoreline between Destin and Panama City Beach. The communities along 30A — Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton Beach, Seacrest, Santa Rosa Beach — have a character and beauty that's genuinely different from Destin.
The beaches are more natural. Much of the 30A shoreline is protected by state parkland and conservation easements. You get wider, more undeveloped beach with natural dune vegetation that gives photos a wilder, more dramatic quality.
Less foot traffic. The 30A beaches tend to be quieter, especially at golden hour. You're less likely to have strangers walking through your session.
The communities are stunning. If you're shooting in or near Rosemary Beach, Seaside, or Watercolor, the architecture and landscaping of these communities can be incorporated into your session for a unique look that's very different from a standard beach portrait.
Santa Rosa Beach is a sweet spot. The Santa Rosa Beach area sits right in the middle of 30A and has some of the most beautiful, accessible beach on the entire Florida Panhandle. See our Santa Rosa Beach family portrait gallery for examples of what sessions look like along this stretch.
Honestly — whichever one you're already staying at. Because we come to you, location logistics aren't a reason to choose one over the other from a photography standpoint. The light is equally beautiful along the full stretch of this coast. We know both areas well. We'll make great images wherever you are.
Reach out here with your trip dates and where you're staying — Destin, 30A, or anywhere in between — and we'll plan a session around your location and the best light of your trip.
