Destin Extended Family Beach Photographer: Multigenerational Sessions on the Emerald Coast

An extended family beach session is one of the most meaningful things you can do during a Gulf Coast vacation. Grandparents and grandchildren, adult siblings with their own families, multiple generations in one place at one time — these gatherings don't happen as often as anyone would like, and having photographs that actually capture the love and connection of everyone together is worth more than people realize until years later.

We photograph a lot of extended family sessions in Destin and across the Florida Panhandle, and it's work we genuinely love. Here's what makes these sessions go well.

What Extended Family Sessions Actually Require

The challenge of a multigenerational family session isn't the photography — it's the logistics. Getting 15 or 20 people organized, keeping the energy positive, making sure Grandma is comfortable, making sure the toddlers haven't fully melted down, capturing the formal group shots and the real moments in between — all in a 45-minute golden hour window.

This is why having two photographers matters so much for extended family sessions.

While Shelley is directing the group — managing spacing, sightlines, expressions, and making sure the formal portraits are working — Blaine is capturing everything else: the grandmother laughing at something one of the kids said, the cousins doing their own thing at the edge of the frame, the quiet moment between two siblings that no one staged. Those are the images that end up framed and fought over at Christmas, and they only happen because someone was there to catch them.

Planning Your Extended Family Session

Before large extended family sessions, we like to talk through a few things:

Sub-group shots. Most extended families want more than just the full group photo. Immediate family units, just the grandkids, the adult siblings together, couples — we'll sequence these efficiently so you're not spending the entire golden hour reorganizing everyone between each shot.

Special accommodations. If Grandpa uses a cane, if someone has mobility limitations, if the youngest grandchild has a very narrow window of cooperation — we want to know. We'll plan around it rather than discover it mid-session.

What you want to walk away with. Some families want formal, classic portraits. Others want candid, lifestyle-driven images that feel more like documentary. Most want both. Tell us what matters to you and we'll orient the session around that.

We Come to Your Destin Location

For extended families especially, the logistics of getting everyone somewhere can feel like a production before the production. We come to you — beach house, condo, resort. Everyone walks out the back door onto the sand, and the session starts from there. Grandparents don't have to ride in a car. Little kids don't have to wait. The whole thing feels significantly more relaxed.

The Destin Light for Family Portraits

Golden hour on the Emerald Coast is particularly flattering for multigenerational groups. The warm, soft light is complimentary to every age — from babies to grandparents — in a way that harsher midday light absolutely isn't. We schedule exclusively around this window, and we book one family per sunset. Your extended family gets the entire golden hour to themselves.
