Beach Photographer Gulf Shores AL: How Our Session Planning Process Works

Wondering what it's actually like to book a Gulf Shores Alabama beach photographer? Here's exactly how we plan and run a Shelley B Photography session from start to finish.

Beach Photographer Gulf Shores AL: How Our Session Planning Process Works

One of the most common things we hear from families after their session is some version of: "That was so much easier than I expected."

And that's exactly what we aim for. Beach photography on the Gulf Coast should feel like a relaxed, fun part of your vacation — not a stressful production you have to manage. A lot of that comes down to how well the session is planned before you ever set foot in the sand.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how a Shelley B Photography session actually works, from the first message you send us to the moment you're scrolling through your finished gallery.

Step 1: You Reach Out

Everything starts with a simple message through our contact form. We ask for a few basics: where you're staying (beach house, condo, rental), roughly how many people will be in the session, and your trip dates.

That's it to get started. No lengthy questionnaires, no overwhelming intake forms. Just tell us who you are and when you're coming.

Step 2: We Talk Through the Details

Once we hear from you, we'll follow up to nail down a few things:

Timing. Gulf Coast photography is almost entirely driven by light, and that means we work around golden hour — the window roughly 30–60 minutes before sunset when the light on the Alabama coast turns soft, warm, and absolutely magical. We'll look at sunset times for your specific dates and figure out what works best.

Location. We come to you, which means the session can happen right where you're staying. If you're at a beach house in Fort Morgan, we'll meet you there. Orange Beach condo with a walkover? Perfect. Gulf Shores state park access? We know it well. If you have a spot in mind, great. If you're not sure, we can make a recommendation based on where you're staying and how many people are in your group.

Group logistics. For larger groups — extended families, reunions, multi-generational gatherings — we'll talk through timing, spacing, and whether anyone needs special accommodations. We want to know if Grandma uses a walker, if the toddler reliably melts down after 6pm, or if there are two branches of the family that are going to want their own sub-group shots. The more we know, the better we can plan.

Step 3: We Lock In Your Date — One Family Per Sunset

Once details are confirmed, we hold your evening. And here's something important: we only book one family per sunset.

That means the entire golden hour window — typically 45 minutes to an hour of spectacular Gulf Coast light — belongs entirely to your family. There's no other session before you we're rushing to finish, and no session after you we're worried about starting. We're fully present, unhurried, and focused completely on you.

This is a deliberate choice we've made, even though it means we could theoretically book more clients. We've found that the quality of the session — and the quality of the images — is just better when there's no time pressure and no distractions.

Step 4: Outfit Coordination (We Help With This)

A surprisingly common source of stress before beach sessions is figuring out what to wear. Families overthink it, or everyone shows up in slightly clashing colors, or someone grabs the wrong outfit at the last minute.

We send a simple guidance note before your session covering what tends to photograph beautifully in Gulf Coast light (soft neutrals, ocean tones, coordinated but not matchy-matchy) and what to avoid (busy patterns, neon colors, overly formal looks that don't fit the beach vibe).

You don't need to overthink it — we've seen every combination of outfits work and not work, and we're happy to give you honest feedback if you want to send us a photo of what everyone's planning to wear.

Step 5: The Day Of — We Meet You There

On session day, we arrive at your location a few minutes early to scope the light and identify the best spots to start. When your family comes out, we introduce ourselves, get everyone comfortable, and ease into things.

We don't hand you a script or force you into stiff poses right off the bat. We start by just getting everyone talking and moving naturally, and the posed shots come after everyone's warmed up. With young kids especially, this makes a big difference — they open up and become themselves once they've had a few minutes to run around and forget there's a camera pointed at them.

Because both Shelley and Blaine are photographing your session, you get two simultaneous perspectives the whole time. Shelley might be directing the group for a formal family shot while Blaine is capturing the wide-angle scene — and then they switch, and the candid moments are covered while the close portraits happen. This dual-photographer approach is especially valuable for large groups where there's always something happening on the edges.

Step 6: The Gallery

After your session, we cull and edit your images and deliver the finished gallery digitally. You'll be able to download high-resolution files, share them with family members, and order prints directly.

The Hasselblad medium format files we shoot — at 100 megapixels per image — give you incredible flexibility for printing. These images look stunning at any size, from small framed prints to large wall canvases. When people ask why their prints look so sharp and vivid compared to photos from other sessions, the answer is almost always the camera system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book?
Sunset slots during peak summer season (June–August) fill up fast — sometimes weeks out. We recommend reaching out as soon as you know your trip dates. Off-season (fall and spring) tends to have more flexibility.

What if it rains?
We keep a close eye on the forecast and will reach out if weather looks problematic. We have a clear rescheduling policy and will work with you to find an alternative time.

Can we do the session at sunrise instead of sunset?
Yes! Sunrise sessions are beautiful on the Gulf Coast and tend to have fewer people on the beach. The light is equally stunning. If you have early risers in your group, it's absolutely worth considering.

What if we want both formal portraits and candid shots?
That's exactly how every session runs. We mix formal group arrangements with natural, unscripted moments throughout. You'll end up with a mix of both in your final gallery.

Let's Plan Your Session

We photograph families along the entire Gulf Coast — Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido Key, Fort Morgan, and the Florida Panhandle. Wherever you're staying, we'll come to you.
